Gates and automation: designing the gate around the operator
A gate is two jobs. Someone builds and finishes a steel structure; someone else makes it open reliably for years. When those two are unconnected suppliers, the gap between them is where the trouble sits.

Automation constrains the fabrication
Weight, balance, hinge position, ground clearance and post rigidity all determine what an operator can move reliably. A gate designed purely for appearance frequently cannot be automated well.
Deciding automation before fabrication is cheaper than retrofitting around a finished gate.
Finishing has to survive the moving parts
Gates flex, rub and get knocked. Coating at hinge points, latch contact and ground clearance takes the most punishment, and preparation and coating choice have to account for movement rather than a static surface.
The gap between suppliers
In a split arrangement, the fabricator says the gate is correct and the automation installer says the gate is unsuitable. Both can be partly right, and the customer is left arbitrating.
- Agree the operator and duty cycle before the gate is drawn
- Confirm post footings and rigidity for the intended operator
- Plan power, control and safety devices at the same time
