Abrasive blasting and sandblasting: the same job, different words
Most people asking for sandblasting want abrasive blasting. The words describe the same process — propelling an abrasive medium at a surface — but the medium matters far more than the label.

What the process does
Abrasive blasting drives a hard medium at a surface under pressure. It strips what is on the surface — old coating, mill scale, rust, contamination — and leaves behind a clean, roughened profile.
That profile is the real product. A coating does not stick to a smooth, contaminated surface; it grips a clean, angular one. Blasting is preparation, not cleaning for its own sake.
Why people still say sandblasting
Silica sand was the original medium, so the name stuck. Sand is now avoided in most workshop settings because of the respirable silica hazard, and other media perform better anyway.
So when an enquiry says sandblasting, we read it as abrasive blasting and then ask the question that actually matters: what is the item, what is on it now, and what is going on it afterwards?
Media choice changes the outcome
Different media cut differently. Angular media bite and profile; rounded media peen and clean. Softer media strip coating without reshaping the substrate underneath.
- Steel grit and shot — heavy stripping and profiling of structural steel
- Garnet — aggressive, low-dust cutting for general steel preparation
- Glass bead — cleaning and satin finishing without heavy profile
- Softer media — stripping coating from thinner or softer substrates
When blasting is not the answer
Thin sheet can distort under an aggressive medium. Some assemblies have bearings, seals or threads that cannot be exposed to abrasive at all. Chemical stripping or mechanical preparation is sometimes the right call instead.
It is a judgement made per item, which is why an accurate description or a photo is worth more than a specification guess.
Common questions
Is sandblasting different from abrasive blasting?
In practice they describe the same process. Abrasive blasting is the accurate term because silica sand is rarely the medium used.
Does blasting damage the metal?
Correctly matched media and pressure do not. Over-aggressive blasting on thin material can distort it, which is why media and pressure are chosen per item.
Do I need blasting before powder coating?
Usually yes for steel with existing coating, scale or corrosion. A coating applied over an unprepared surface is the most common reason a finish fails early.
