Choosing a protective coating for coastal and industrial WA

Start with the environment, not the product
Salt-laden air carries chloride onto steel and keeps corrosion running long after the surface looks dry. Distance from surf, prevailing wind, shelter, wash-down and how often the item is wetted all change the exposure.
The same item can need a light system inland and a substantially heavier one within a kilometre of the coast. Describing where the item lives is the single most useful thing an enquiry can include.
The failure modes to design against
Most coating failures fall into a short list.
- Chloride-driven corrosion under an intact-looking film
- Edge and weld failure where film thickness thins out
- Mechanical damage that breaks the film and starts local corrosion
- UV degradation of the topcoat, which is cosmetic before it is structural
- Adhesion loss traced back to inadequate preparation
Systems, not single coats
Severe-service protection is layered. A primer does adhesion and corrosion inhibition, an intermediate builds thickness and barrier, a topcoat handles UV, abrasion and appearance.
Changing one layer changes the system, so mixing products from different systems is a common and expensive mistake.
Preparation still decides the result
Coating performance tracks preparation more closely than product choice. Soluble salts left on the surface, an inadequate profile, or coating applied outside its stated conditions will undo a well-chosen system.

How long will a protective coating last?
It depends on the environment, the system and the preparation. Rather than quote a figure, we scope the environment and specify a system suited to it.
Can existing corroded steel be saved?
Often yes. Blasting back to sound steel reveals whether section loss is cosmetic or structural, and that determines repair versus replacement.
Is galvanising better than coating?
They do different jobs and are frequently combined. Coating over galvanising needs a compatible system and correct preparation of the zinc surface.
