Security screen doors and window screens: what actually matters

A security screen is a barrier. An insect screen is a filter. They can look similar from three metres away and behave completely differently under force.

Mesh is only one of four parts

Comparisons usually focus on mesh, but a screen is a system and the weakest part sets the result.

  • Mesh — woven stainless steel, perforated sheet or aluminium, each behaving differently
  • Frame — section and corner construction, which is where force concentrates
  • Mesh retention — how the mesh is held into the frame under load
  • Fixing and hardware — hinges, locks and how the unit attaches to the building

Where units are actually defeated

Rarely through the middle of the mesh. Failure happens at the retention system, at the hinge side, or at the fixings into the wall or existing frame.

That makes installation as significant as product. A well-made unit fixed poorly is a poorly performing unit.

Coastal considerations

Near the coast, dissimilar metals in contact and salt deposits accelerate corrosion. Stainless mesh in an aluminium frame needs correct isolation, and hardware choice matters as much as the mesh grade.

Regular fresh-water rinsing extends the life of any screen in a coastal setting far more than most people expect.

Comparing quotes honestly

Ask what the mesh is, how it is retained, what the frame section is, and how the unit fixes to the building. Two quotes that look alike frequently differ on all four.

Common questions

Is stainless mesh always the best choice?

It is strong and widely used, but frame, retention and fixing determine performance just as much. Perforated sheet suits some situations better.

Can security screens go on existing windows and doors?

Usually yes, provided the existing frame and surrounding structure can carry the fixings properly.

Can Halo Security WA supply and install these?

Yes. Halo Security WA measures, quotes, supplies and installs security doors, screen doors and window security screens across Rockingham, Baldivis, Mandurah and southern Perth, and can also repair or upgrade existing units.
